Project Wonderful Vs. Private Advertising

1 August 2008 441 views 2 Comments

A few months ago, I got eager to try Project Wonderful. For those who don’t know it yet, it is an advertising network where advertisers bid to advertise on a certain website or blog. On the other side, publishers like me earns money. The highest bidders gets to win an advertising space.

I first enrolled my older blogs to try the potential of this program and luckily, got approved the next day.

Bids and Earnings

At first, I am very much impressed with how bids are going. I had my advertising blocks priced at $1.00/block per day and got bidders immediately. But… of course, not everytime is a winning streak. I had more times when there were no bids at all.

It took me almost a month to earn the minimum payout of $10. To my excitement, I requested for it immediately and thankfully, got paid via PayPal.

When Prices Gets Lowered

Few more days or so, I am noticing bidding prices from other blogs are getting lower and lower. To compete with the competition, I was forced to lower also my price until it got to as low as $0.02 per ad block.

$0.02 per ad block? Imagine earning just a few cents from an ad space that is eating up the precious spaces in your blog. That’s like earning from a single click to your Adsense or Bidvertiser ads. And if your blog doesn’t get that much attention, you might probably end up earning below $2 per month because only few advertisers will buy in.

Before Project Wonderful, I am also accepting private advertising deals. My earnings from these advertisements ranges from $6 to $12 per single 125×125 ad space per month. That’s with a single ad block only. What if you have 6 or more ad blocks… See the difference?

A Good Suggestion

Yes, I know Project Wonderful is better than nothing. It’s true that not everytime, someone will buy a private advertising at your blog but those people from Project Wonderful should have not allowed the prices to get that low. They should have set a limit to it for publishers interests.

Can you imagine someone pricing their 125 x 125 ad block to $0.01/per day? That’s like voluntarily cutting short the true value of your precious blog…

2 cents is crazy! Have you tried Etology yet? I’ve been using this service for a few months now and so far I’m quite happy with the results. Project Wonderful is nice, but I wasn’t happy with my overall earnings. Therefore, I started searching for something better and eventually found Etology. With Etology you can set your own prices (no bidding), which in the long run equals higher earnings and less hassle. Check out this review that I wrote a few weeks ago.

Project wonderful to me is a total waste of your site’s real estate. I used it before, and had a couple of payouts - but it wasnt worth it. Sometimes you have to create a brand out of your site and that includes accepting ads at a price that won’t give the impression that the site’s too cheap hundreths of a cent is accepted.
